Club Legends and Community Spirit
What truly makes Swindon Cricket Club special is the people – the devoted members and the supportive community that have sustained the club for generations. As a volunteer-run village cricket club, we owe our success to countless individuals who have given their time, effort, and heart to Swindon CC.
One such individual is David Powell, our club’s longest-serving administrator. David Powell became Club Secretary in 1978 (the year we moved to Hinksford Lane) and served in that role diligently for over 40 years. In 2020, he transitioned to become our Club President. His leadership and commitment over decades have been nothing short of legendary. From overseeing the development of the ground in the late 70s to guiding the club’s operations into the 21st century, David’s influence is present in every corner of Swindon CC. We often say that David knows where every symbolic “brick” in the clubhouse came from, because he likely laid it himself or coordinated it! The respect and admiration he commands at the club is a testament to his unwavering dedication. It’s not uncommon to see him at the ground these days sharing stories of the past and mentoring the next generation – truly a club legend in every sense.
Alongside David, there have been many other stalwarts of Swindon CC. From long-tenured captains and prolific players to behind-the-scenes heroes like scorers and groundsmen, our club’s history is rich with people who have worn the Swindon badge with pride. We celebrate those who reach personal milestones with us: a player scoring their maiden century, someone taking five wickets, or a junior who progresses through every age group to the 1st XI. These individual achievements build the collective legacy of the club. Many of our members spend decades with Swindon CC – some families have seen three generations play for the club. This continuity creates a warm, familial atmosphere. When new players join, they aren’t just joining a team – they’re welcomed into the Swindon CC family.
Our club also thrives on a strong community spirit and volunteer culture. Everything we accomplish, from preparing the pitch to running junior coaching sessions, happens because volunteers step up. Parents, players, and supporters all contribute. On match days, you might find volunteers manning the scorebox, making teas and sandwiches for the interval, or helping run the bar in the evening. This shared effort means success tastes sweeter – everyone has a hand in it. We make it a point to acknowledge and thank our volunteers at every opportunity, whether it’s at the annual awards night or a simple post on social media. It’s a core belief at Swindon CC that community comes first – the cricket is important, but the friendships and solidarity off the field are what sustain the club year after year.
Because we’re a village club, engaging with the local community beyond cricket is very important to us. Our facilities double as a community centre in many ways. The clubhouse lounge (with its comfortable, carpeted seating bays) is often used for events like quiz nights, charity fundraisers, and even the occasional birthday party. The bar is stocked with affordable drinks (including that Green Duck ale on tap as a nod to supporting local business), making it a popular gathering spot. Villagers who aren’t active in the cricket team still come by to watch matches on sunny days or to socialize in the clubhouse on weekend evenings. We love seeing new faces; some come as spectators and end up as club members or volunteers once they experience the welcoming environment.
Swindon Cricket Club also contributes to the wider cricket community in Staffordshire. We frequently participate in county development initiatives – for instance, we host coaching clinics for kids in the summer holidays in partnership with the Staffordshire Cricket Board. Now and then, our ground has even hosted inter-club finals or county junior fixtures, showcasing our excellent pitch to a broader audience. Moreover, a few talented players who grew up at Swindon have gone on to play for Staffordshire representative teams, which is a badge of honor for us as a grassroots club. We maintain good relationships with neighboring clubs as well; friendly rivalry on the field turns into friendship off the field. It’s not unusual for us to invite other local clubs to join our social events or charity matches.
In essence, Swindon Cricket Club is woven firmly into the fabric of local life. Our history isn’t just about matches won or lost; it’s about the community we’ve built and the legacy we continue to uphold. From 1903 to today, what started as a simple love for cricket in a small village has blossomed into a multi-generational institution where values like sportsmanship, teamwork, and community support are cherished. We’re proud of our past and passionate about our future. With every season, we welcome new members and supporters to join us in writing the next chapter of the Swindon Cricket Club story – together, as one club and one community.
