Achievements and Milestones

Over the years, Swindon Cricket Club has reached important milestones and celebrated numerous achievements that highlight our progress. Below is a timeline of key moments in our club’s history, showcasing the growth of the club and its on-field successes:

1903 – Founded: Swindon Cricket Club is founded, bringing organized cricket to the village of Swindon in South Staffordshire. This marks the humble beginning of our club’s journey over a century ago.

1978 – First Home Ground: After decades of playing on borrowed fields, we establish our own home ground at Hinksford Lane, Swindon. The once overgrown land is transformed into a cricket field and a pavilion is built, giving the club a permanent base for the first time.

2000s – Expansion of Teams: The club grows significantly. We field a 1st XI and 2nd XI on Saturdays, and add a Sunday team that joins the Worcestershire Sunday Border League. Our junior section also flourishes, with teams at every age group from Under-8 up to Under-18. This period sees us nurturing young talent and becoming a club with a full pathway from youth cricket to senior teams.

Late 2010s – Top Division Cricket: Our 1st XI rises through the league ranks and earns promotion to the Staffordshire Premier Division (the top tier of the South Staffordshire League). Playing in the Premier Division means Swindon CC is now competing among the elite clubs in the county, a testament to the hard work of players and coaches over many seasons.

2019 – County T20 Finalists: Swindon CC reaches the final of the Staffordshire County Twenty20 Cup in 2019. In a thrilling finals day at Beacon Cricket Club (Wombourne), our 1st XI finished as runners-up, falling to Wolverhampton CC in the championship match. Despite the narrow loss, this remains one of the proudest moments in our competitive history – it was the first time Swindon CC contested a county-level final.

2020 – Third XI Reintroduced: We expand our senior setup by reintroducing a 3rd XI in the 2020 season. (Our club had previously run three Saturday teams but the 3rd XI was disbanded in 2015 due to numbers; by 2020 we had grown again to support three teams.) The revived 3rd XI provides more playing opportunities, especially for younger players graduating from the junior ranks, ensuring everyone can get a game on the weekend.

2024 – Under-13 County Champions: Our Under-13 youth team makes history by winning the Staffordshire U13 County Cup in 2024. In the final, the young Swindon team defended a total of 83/7 and bowled out Moddershall & Oulton CC for just 38 to claim the title. The boys then represented Staffordshire in the national stages of the competition, even winning a regional game against the Leicestershire champions before narrowly losing in the semi-finals to Great Melton CC of Norfolk in a last-ball thriller. This youth triumph was a huge boost for the club and proof of the strength of our coaching program.

Each of these milestones reflects a chapter of Swindon Cricket Club’s evolution – from securing our own ground to climbing the competitive ladder, and from broadening our teams to nurturing champions at the junior level. We take pride in these achievements, big and small, because they show how far the club has come since 1903. Our history is a continuum of hard work, community support, and love for the game, and we’re always looking forward to the next milestone to add to this list.
