Our History: The Early Years (1903–1970s)
Swindon Cricket Club has been a part of our community since 1903, making it one of the enduring village cricket clubs in Staffordshire. Our club was established in the village of Swindon (South Staffordshire), about five miles from Dudley, during a time when cricket was blossoming across the county. (In fact, Staffordshire’s county cricket team was founded in 1871, evidence of how well-rooted the sport was by the early 1900s.) A group of local cricket enthusiasts came together to form Swindon Cricket Club in 1903, laying the foundation for over a century of cricketing heritage that followed.
In those early decades, our club led a nomadic existence without a permanent ground. We played “home” matches on various fields and borrowed pitches around the area. Despite not having our own dedicated home, the passion for cricket in Swindon never waned. Players and supporters rallied together to keep the club alive, arranging fixtures on any suitable piece of land they could find. This period forged the club’s resilient spirit and strong camaraderie – everyone had to pull together to transport equipment, prepare makeshift pitches, and sometimes even herd grazing cows off the field before a game!
Throughout the mid-20th century, local cricket became more organized. The Staffordshire Club Cricket Championship (South Staffordshire County League) emerged in the 1970s as a structured league for clubs like ours. Swindon CC joined these competitions, testing our skills against other teams in the region. We might not have had a home ground then, but we certainly had a home team – a loyal group of players representing Swindon village cricket with pride. By competing in league cricket, our club’s profile grew and so did the ambition to find a permanent home base.
After decades of perseverance, the opportunity to establish our own ground finally came. In 1978, a landmark moment in our early history arrived – this was the year Swindon Cricket Club secured a field on Hinksford Lane to develop into our home ground. The early years of wandering were coming to an end, and a new chapter in our club’s story was about to begin, marked by having a place we could truly call home.
